Ever since its first release in 1987, Perl has played a significant role in the areas of system management, web site backends, and web applications.
In recent decades, however, we have seen a strong increase in desktop applications, not only on Microsoft Windows and OSX platforms, but also on Linux. Smartphone applications on iOS and Android also belong to this category. Perl is remarkably almost completely absent in this important and rapidly growing market segment.

There are several explanations for this phenomenon. For example, the success of Perl as a cross-platform scripting language has distracted attention from other application areas. But there is more, much more.

This presentation examines the requirements that a modern development tool must meet in order to develop fully-fledged desktop applications. On the basis of a practical example, it will show what shortcomings, pitfalls and other problems Perl has in this area. Fortunately, there are also solutions.

Perl can shake off the legacy of the past, but not without pain. Prepare for some staggering conclusions.
